Nucleus hives, or nucs, are made by dividing strong colonies in the early spring. Each nuc is given a mated queen (your choice of Italian, Carniolan or Russian-Carniolan hybrid) and given time to establish themselves. When you receive your nuc it will consist of 5 deep frames with a combination of brood, honey, and pollen and some space for expansion. Because there is brood present and young bees emerging, nucs build up more quickly than packages and will need to be transferred to full size box.
